Emperor Haile Selassie in Bath

Emperor Haile Selassie I remains one of the most significant global figures of the 20th century; an enduring symbol of resistance, leadership, and dignity in the face of adversity. As Emperor of Ethiopia, his influence extended far beyond his nation’s borders, particularly during a period marked by global conflict and the rise of fascism. His courageous stance against the Italian invasion of Ethiopia and his powerful appeal to the League of Nations in 1936 positioned him as a leading voice for justice, sovereignty, and international cooperation at a time when such principles were under grave threat.

His connection to the city of Bath, particularly Fairfield House, forms an important chapter in both local and international history. During his years in exile in the United Kingdom, Bath became a place of refuge and reflection, where he continued his diplomatic efforts while maintaining hope for Ethiopia’s liberation. Fairfield House, which served as his residence, stands today as a lasting symbol of the city’s role in offering sanctuary and its place within a broader global narrative of resilience, solidarity, and historical significance.

Exile and Residence at Fairfield House

During the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935, Emperor Haile Selassie was forced into exile. After his historic appeal to the League of Nations in 1936, he spent several years in the United Kingdom, where the city of Bath became his home.  From 1936 to 1941, the Emperor resided at Fairfield House, which was generously provided to him as a place of refuge. During this period, Fairfield House was not simply a residence—it became a center of diplomatic activity, cultural exchange, and quiet determination.

Even in exile, Haile Selassie remained steadfast in his mission to restore Ethiopian sovereignty, embodying resilience and unwavering leadership. Today, Fairfield House stands as a powerful symbol of Bath’s connection to global history and its role in offering sanctuary during times of crisis.

Central to Emperor Haile Selassie’s legacy is his role as a military leader. As Commander-in-Chief of Ethiopian forces, he led resistance efforts against fascist occupation and worked closely with Allied powers during the Second World War.

The Guildhall and BLAC Awards 2026

Following his restoration to the Ethiopian throne, Emperor Haile Selassie made a return visit to Bath, a moment of reflection and gratitude. During this visit, he was formally hosted at the historic Guildhall, a building long associated with civic pride and ceremonial significance.

It is especially fitting that this year’s BLAC Awards will be held at the Guildhall on Friday 16 October, from 6pm to midnight.

Hosting the awards in this historic venue – where Emperor Haile Selassie himself was once welcomed – creates a powerful link between past and present. It allows us to celebrate contemporary achievements in a space that embodies resilience, heritage, and international connection.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey once said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
